FOTA & Remote Management for a Connected Logistics Tracker

How we implemented firmware-over-the-air, remote configuration, and log collection for a US logistics tracking platform — replacing a manual update process and optimizing for low-power devices.

Key ResultDelivery

Replaced manual end-user firmware process with remote FOTA, configuration management, and log collection — fully integrated with the operator's cloud platform and optimized for low-power devices.

Context

A US logistics technology company operating a fleet of GPS/cellular tracking devices needed over-the-air capabilities for their field-deployed units. The existing firmware update process was manual — requiring end users to physically connect devices and perform the update themselves. As the fleet grew, this approach became unsustainable: update adoption was inconsistent, firmware versions fragmented across the field, and diagnosing issues on remote devices required physical retrieval.

Our Approach

We designed and implemented three over-the-air capabilities for the tracker platform. FOTA (Firmware Over The Air) enables remote firmware deployment to field devices without user intervention. Remote configuration management allows the operator to push parameter changes — reporting intervals, geofence rules, power profiles — without a full firmware update. Log-over-the-air provides remote collection of device diagnostics and operational logs for troubleshooting without physical access. The entire architecture was optimized for low-power, battery-operated devices, minimizing radio-on time and data transfer overhead.

Cloud Integration

The OTA system integrates with the operator's existing cloud backend and fleet management dashboard. Firmware versions, configuration states, and device health are visible from the same interface used for fleet tracking and operations. Update campaigns can be triggered and monitored from the dashboard, giving the operations team full visibility into deployment progress and device status across the fleet.

Results

The manual end-user update process was fully replaced by remote, operator-controlled firmware deployment. Configuration changes that previously required a firmware release cycle can now be pushed independently. Remote log collection eliminated the need to physically retrieve devices for diagnostics. The low-power design ensures that OTA operations have minimal impact on device battery life — critical for trackers operating on battery for extended periods in the field.
